how to remove rootkit virus

Does anyone have any suggestions on removal of a hacktool.rootkit virus?

Thats a last ditch resort, re-install not preffered at this stage. My norton blocks it so I will keep trying.

Try to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop, check for the tool's Updates before running a scan

Did that several times, in safe mode and normal mode. Didnt seem to help.
I found a microsoft malicious software removal tool. I will try that next .

Hacktool.rootkit is prety persistent as far as I could find :( Good luck!

I'm so glad I haven't had virus problems for years ("knocks on solid oak" ;) )

Persistent is not the word! Anyway, it doesnt cause major problems as Norton blocks it. Still , I want to try to find a way to remove it without a windows re-install.

Remove your hard drive and connect it to your second PC, preferably with USB adapter, not in the boot time. Then run malware n bytes, and scan that disk. 99% it will work. If not I have some more technical methods to suggest.

OK, then , thanks for that. I will try it on my sons pc tonight. I have a hdd caddy I can use for that purpose.
