computer shutting down at random

Postby motiondave » Thu 18. Apr 2013, 14:39

Hello all, hopefully someone can advise me.
On one of my sims is a home built PC. 890 chipset Motherboard, AMD 965 quad core, 4 gig ram, GTX 560Ti card, 750 watt true PSU. It is only running one hdd and one fan.
It has Win 7 32 bit.
The thing is this, it has random shutdowns, but not gradual, but like you just pull the power plug. Straight off.
I have run benchmarks on cpu and gpu for hours, no overheating or power supply shut down.
it happens during a game, be it dirt showdown, race 07 . It just happens, mostly with motion going.
No earthing on frame, no voltage astray, Nuthin!
I have a g27 on it, but it is bolted to MDF with carpet on it, so completely isolated.
Bios is current, windows updates are current, the next thing I will try is using an older graphics driver as I have a 500 series chipset in it and using 600 chipset driver from nvidia.
I dunno....I have NEVER had a pc do this to me before. I can run the pc setup for gaming for 5 hours, with no problems, or after 10 mins and it will shutdown.
Any ideas?
Cheers, David.

Hi David,
I had this happen less than a month ago. I put new cmos battery in, checked all connections, well, just did everything I knew and thought was causing the issue....and finally, swapped a new PSU and it fixed the issue. Appeared under heavy load, the PSU would create an open and just "pull the plug".
Good Luck,

Ok, thanks I will try that as well.
Funny about PSU, I can run it under heaven benchmark and she dont quit, just in a game, and not even a graphically intense game.

David,
I know what you're saying...mine would just quit, at any time. Seemed more isolated under heavy load. It finally got to the point that at boot up, it would get to the Windows Banner Screen and freeze, no hard drive activity. I finally checked the 5v rail and it was showing 4.3v to 4.7 v. Then I decided to swap PSU with one I had...and the issue was fixed...has been working great since. Go figure.
Have a blessed one.

so can the operator....temperament is way high at the moment

Still, I will leave this thread running as someone else may have an idea.
Its weird as it just will do this at odd times. probably power supply, but I have heard of graphics drivers giving the same problems.
Or it might be something else.
Ideas anyone?

Dave,
Yes, you're correct with the GPU - however, they will mostly cause crazy spikes, or crazy colors, BEFORE you get a black screen - mostly "never" will they shut down a pc's power completely - been there, done that.
PSU's are crazy animals when they start going bad................
ALSO, IF you are overclocked, heat will shut one down in a heartbeat as a precaution to burning up the cpu....just another thought.
Let us know.

not overclocked, not overheating.
I will try a different graphics benchmark to see if I can overload the bitch.
I have run a cpu benchmark for hours as well, no overheating to cause shut down.
The computer shop reckons the PSU is fine, so maybe time to shop somwhere else. I have had to do that already, used to spend thousands a year at one place, then had 3 failures of components in a short time, they just said "it happens". No real help.
Bah!
I will test again over the weekend if I get time.
Thanks Chiggin.
But has anyone else had issues?

Dave,
Yes bud, pc's are a bitch at times.
I always keep a spare PSU around - normally from upgrading and going with a more powerful PSU...
I was thinking about an issue several years back...it was not the PSU or "anything" I could find after several days...
so as a redundancy, when unit was down, I booted but no power lights on mb, so I wiggled the main supply to pc, and dang it fired right up.
I powered down, disconnected the 24 pin block from mb, sprayed the crap out of it with DeOxit spray, and she worked fine from then on.
Again, go figure..........they are great beasts, but when they act up, it just about puts us in the loony bin for safe keeping.
Good luck - I'll watch for your progress - and have a blessed one.
