Monster moto shield ok with wiper motors?  Topic is solved

Postby RiftFlyer » Sat 24. May 2014, 23:58

Hi guys,

I received an arduino uno and a monster moto shield for a new project. I will be using wiper motors. I just had a look at the shield and can't believe this thing has enough copper to handle any kind of current! Are you guys that are running them having any issues?

I will add heat sinks but it's the traces on the board that have me worried. I also wonder if any of you have added caps for inrush current in the unpopulated spots provided.

I'm honestly tempted to send it back if someone recommends a better alternative.

Hi
Never used the monster motor shield, but Iv'e had the same problem with cheap china stuff, The current ratings seem to be based on the chip specs,
but the pcb and connectors aren't man enough.

A new motor driver out https://www.olimex.com/Products/RobotPa ... e-hardware

I have not used this, but the tracks seem good in the pictures, also I would recommend Olimex, as pcb manufacturer.

regards Terry

Hi RiftFlyer!
I never had any problem with motomonster :-) as wipers are only 100W/200W
And around 20 builders did the same choice with satisfaction ;-)

Thanks Mat and Telfel. I'll give the moto shield a go.

Mat are guys adding extra capacitors?

No capacitor needed but a strong Server PowerSupplyUnit or a battery

I have measured 90W per motors while running rFactor in IA mode. It's not much.
You can have a look on my 2DOF projet in my signature. ;)

Thanks Mat. I have a decent server power supply and parallel car battery ready to go.
