Linear driven SCN6 knee lever rebuild

Postby Carl » Sun 5. Feb 2017, 04:14

Well after 2 years of enjoying my first build the time was right to try something new. Santa had delivered a shiny new Rift VR CV1 early in December so with a renewed love of sim racing I started gathering some parts and dreaming up some ideas to freshen up the rig. My drives are still as good as the day they arrived and the platform made solely from aluminium chequer plate was in essence not such a bad idea. However, there was a couple of issues. Having the drives mounted vertically as they were up front and out in the open made it a little dangerous for anyone who got too close and my hand was constantly on the E-stop every time a little person was in the seat. Also, the drives are noisy little buggers when being worked hard round the Nurburgring, Laguna Seca or Brands. With this in mind my primary aims are to make the rig safe for little people both in and out the seat and somehow reduce the noise levels.

Here is a pic of the old rig before tear down.

My first aim is to reposition the motors out of harms way. I toyed with several concepts but without wanting to change everything my only option seemed to be mounting the motors in a horizontal plane under the upper deck and creating a linkage system to obtain the vertical movement. I was fortunate enough to aquire 4 nearly new linear bearing rails and 8 heavy duty linear slide bearings. And so it begins...

To spruce it up a little I sprayed the alloy a matt black once it was all stripped down. I saw another rig painted up this colour and thought it looked quite cool.

I couldn't resist putting a couple of go-faster GT40 stripes down the upper deck but these are being painted over soon.

Whilst I was rummaging in the garage I found a tin of yellow spray paint so the CV joint got a lick of paint too.

Once the rails were in place I fitted the trusty SCN6 drives.

I toyed with the idea of mounting a plate on top of the bearings to sit a couple of clevis mounts linking the SCN6's to the upper deck via the linear bearings but this would have been messy and likely created an overhanging pinch point. I had a couple of chunky bits of alloy in the shed so decided to fabricate my own link carriage.

I had just enough to make 2 carriages and some new mounts for my new gas struts.

These gas struts were a real bargain. £9.75 off of ebay for the pair... amazing!!!

I next mounted the upper deck to check geometry.

All looks good but the real proof will be when I ride it.

I sourced a little bit of Rexroth alloy extrusion and re-built the steering column support along with in-fill trim. My idea was to use the channels as a cable tidy for the wheel and cap them all in. It's worked a treat.

I will take some better photos of this tomorrow and add them to the thread. I have kept the linear bearing steering column as this is really handy for moving the wheel into the perfect position. My seat if fully adjustable too so wanted to keep the flexibility.

Two weekends and about 20 hours in and I'm operational again. The rig is a lot safer as all the main moving parts are now housed neatly underneath the seating platform. Cables are all nice and tidy out the way. Time for a test drive.

Two hours driving like a hooligan round the Nurburgring and alls good. The knee lever works well. The natural deceleration at the top of the curve makes for a good smooth feel on acceleration whilst the harsh drop for deceleration feels like your hard on the brakes. I'm not completely happy with the feel and am gonna try increasing the length of the tie rod from the bearing carriage to the upper deck. Also, one of the drive cards was getting unusually warm. By increasing the length of the tie rod I should reduce the ammount of force needed to recover from a hard stop easier. Also, it should reduce the total throw which isn't such a bad thing when you slide off the track and hit a wall. Once I'm happy with the motion I will move onto the sound proofing and guarding elements.

A short vid of my lad tearing it up before we tore it down.

Can't remember how to post videos... hmmm. Maybe someone can let me now where I'm going wrong again. Thanks
