Erik's Version of the Joyrider

Postby eloverphx » Sat 21. Jul 2012, 07:11

Brought over from the old X-Sim forum. So the questions had answers previously.. :D

Today I am finally working on my sim platform. After months of working on the motor controllers, adding another child to my family, and having to move in the next month or two, it's time work hard and fast and try to get the platform as far along as I can before I have to pack it up and move to Wisconsin.
I'm hoping I can document my progress here so I can help others interested in a similar build as mine and since I still have many questions I need help answering along the way.
So I will post my drawing of the cockpit frame that I drew that include dimensions, so if anyone has any pointers please tell me so I can avoid wasting time and resource. Thank you community.
My first question to those who have built a joyrider out of metal would be how did you hook your potentiometers to the motor or drive gear? Next did you use belt or steel cable and what did you use for a pulley on the wiper motor? Finally for now how did you build th mounts for the motors on each axis do you have rough dimensions you could share? Thanks everyone again.

And I'm off and running! Tonight I started cutting my metal for the frame of my cockpit. Here is a parts list of what I have cut tonight. The only thing I didn't cut would be the support pieces for the plywood floor. I might use flat stock for that or maybe scrap square stock we'll see after we assemble the parts I have *
2 - 74 1/2"
2 - 37 1/4"
8 - 36"
2 - 19 1/4"
4 - 18"
4 - 12"

That is what i got so far. So far I purchased 4 - 20' sticks of 1-1/4" square steel. Cost me roughly $61 and I think I still have enough to build the outer frame portion. I'll have to purchase more to build the main frame that sits on the floor once I figure out how big it needs to be.

See ya next installment

Today we moved! Got the outer frame assembled and we were able to get movement and amazingly the outer frame was very balanced. Hopefully one more day of welding adjusting we will have the main frame assembled and ready to start on motor mounting. Which will bring more challenges on it's own. Before I get to motor mounting I will be disassembling the joyrider and moving to Wisconsin where I will not have such a great support group and the most helpful friends in the world. They will be missed and are very appreciated. ;)

Here is a link of a video of the joyrider swinging under it's own power after pushing on it.

Finally got the Simulator together and did some test rides without the motors. The motor mounts will be a while before I get started on the design and testing of those.. But check out the movement..

Erik's Version of the Joyrider

Postby eloverphx » Tue 21. Aug 2012, 04:36

Just wanted to make sure no one thinks I abandoned my project. Just getting settled in in Wisconsin now and just pulled one of my joyrider parts out of the garage to give it some paint since my metal is starting to rust. Air here is a little wetter than Phoenix. So for now I don't have space to assemble my joyrider due the housing situation but I will get the parts primed and painted for the time being. Hopefully I can work on my pulley system while I wait for space. Hope everyone is well.

Hi Erik, how are you?
I am about to start building my new Joyrider style motion simulator, that I will keep posting here in the forum of course :D , but I afraid that my old rig of wiper motors will not be able to hanlde it because of its size.
If you are planing to use biger motors please give some information about so I can start figuring out it.

ps. One thing I like about your frame is that there is a lot of space around the seat, I will do that too!

regards!
