Hi, the names Stewart :)
Brand new member of forum and completely new and clueless to motion sims :/
I plan to use a buddy to help me with the wiring diagrams etc and I will build the thing.

Im planning on building a 2dof seat mover only rig and have been reading through the abundance of info on this site/forum.
I think I have a rough idea of what I need to get started but I will list them below and hoping for some info on what I've missed.

Here goes :)
A base (have a simple one in mind with metal rods attached to back of seat)
A u joint for seat (from a car drive shaft I think??????)
2 pololu boards
2 wiper motors (have no clue which ones if any. Open to better suggestions as I plan to use the mains at home if possible)
I read about potentiometers also but have no idea if I need them or what they are for lol
Software and wiring.

Thats all I think I need lol

Hoping to build as cheap as possible that will run from the main electricity at home
Very grateful for any help I recieve as I need all I can get.
Thanks Stu

Hello Stuart and welcome.
yes , you are on the right track.
Just a couple of things
Wiper motor, make sure they are earth isolated from their own casing, otherwise you will get voltage feedback and blow the JRKS and or your PC.
Realistically, these days , most guys are leaning towards big motors like this http://www.motiondynamics.com.au/worm-d ... orque.html or an ebay dayton equivalent. Nice strong motors and 3 times the rotation speed of a wiper.
I have added a diagram to find the earth (thanks bob).
And also a diagram to hook up the JRKS to motors, pots, etc. JRK link http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1393 , put a heatsink on thebig chip and a fan on it, they will handle 30 amps continuous.
The idea of a pot is to give a feedback signal to "tell" the motors where to go next.
it s a matter of making a lever for the pot to stick to and then feeding that lever onto the motor lever.
A cut down tailshaft is ideal for pivot point. Just a matter of getting the frame balanced right.
Software, x-sim of course, there are instructional videos on site http://www.x-sim.de/software.php?lang=eng dig through here.
I have added a diagram for a seat mover to help.
Not sure if I have missed anything, just holler.
Cheers, David.

Thanks Dave,
U have changed my mind from wiper motors as I would like the chair to move as quick or as close to the scn5 actuator rigs :)

I tried to find the motor u recommended in Uk with no luck and im pretty useless at finding alternatives that do the same job lol so i usually resort to copying other folk ;) ive found 2 motors on Prodigys Rig that are DC motors and are sold in UK.

Are they the same as worm gear?

I noticed in the diagrams u posted there are dc power supplies.
Do I need 1 for each motor or will 1 do both and any particular type of power supply?

As for the heat syncs would they be small laptop ones or are there tried and tested ones out there and will they need their own power supply? I have a 450w pc psu lying around if needed.

Thanks again
Stu

the motors on prodigys rig are similar as far as I know and are good, so use them if you can get them local.
For power supply, either use a car battery of 330cca with a 20 amp 12v power supply in parallel for both motors , or one minimum 40 amp power supply per motor at 12v to 14v. So you need 2. Just dig through ebay for something. I use both options as I have 2 sims currently. Both work just as well. Car battery setup was cheaper , but heavier to drag around.
Always good to have too much power.
Heatsinks, I have used T220 transistor heat sinks and they work well, and I have also used cut up cpu heat sinks, the bigger the heatsink you can sit on it, the better, but keep the heat sink from touching and capacitors on the board.
And put a fan over the top to help get rid of the heat.

Sorry last thing lol

Would aluminium profile tubing be strong enough to construct the seat mover diagram u posted above?

Thanks Stu

Its 40mm x 40mm and just going to be cut to the lengths on the diagram above :)

thickness of material?

Then again, the design was based on 25mm x 25mm x 1.6mm steel box with MDF sheet on the bottom of the seat as a base for the unit pivot point.
I used different motors than what is pictured for this one I built a while ago. But big worm gear motor would really kick.
